3 BUILDING COMMUNITY RESILIENCE IN WIGTOWN - REPORT BY COMMUNITY PLANNING AND ENGAGEMENT MANAGER.

Decision

 

3.1     AGREED agree the format for the evening as detailed at paragraph 4 in the report; and

NOTED

3.2     the presentation from the Council’s Resilience and Community Safety Manager regarding the development of Community Resilience in a local and national context; and arrangements for responding to severe weather events;

3.3     the presentation and briefings from Community Resilience Teams in the Wigtown area on initiatives to highlight best practice;

3.4     A summary of the feedback and comments from three community workshops held on the evening which were as follows:-

  • Key Challenges

Leadership/Organisation/Teamwork/Delegation within communities;

Resources and Equipment;

Geography and Communication; and

Making People more resilient in their own home.

  • Solutions

Network with other Community Resilience Teams already set up to gain experience/best practice;

Training and Skills within communities;

Analysis of individual Area Needs and include in Community Resilience Plan;

Self Help Promotion - Emergency Boxes and what should be in them;

Include within School Curriculum to make pupils more aware of issues;

Best Practice lists/Contact Lists (including contacts for Emergency Services/Utility Companies) - use other community resilience experiences;

Go to the people in their homes sometimes is better than relocating to a central point within communities; and

Realistic information shared within communities so that realistic expectations are achieved;

 

3.5     the number of community resilience plans, initiatives and activities which had been undertaken by communities within the Wigtown area to build community resilience; and

3.6     that information would be shared across the region with a view to informing future Community Resilience plans.
