4 ANNANDALE & ESKDALE AREA COMMITTEE (COMMUNITY MEETING) - DUMFRIES & GALLOWAY CHAMBER OF ARTS IN ANNANDALE & ESKDALE - REPORT BY HEAD OF CUSTOMER SERVICES

Decision

 

NOTED

 

4.1     the operation, aims and achievements to date of Dumfries and Galloway Chamber of the Arts (also known as DG Unlimited or DGU) and its current role in facilitating a sector-led approach to the planning, commissioning and monitoring of regional arts projects and services;

 

4.2     the work being undertaken at a local level by the Annandale & Eskdale Arts Hub Convenor and by organisations supported to date through the work of DGU in Annandale & Eskdale;

 

4.3    the presentation from John Wallace, film maker and that his work included engaging with and gathering views of local people and that this work often gave people a new perspective of the places in which they lived;

 

4.4   that a small amount of funding awarded from the Regional Arts Fund had enabled Dumfries and Galloway to lever in £29,000 of funding from other sources;

 

4.5   the request from a local sculptor to ascertain whether any funding remaining from the Tiara project could be used to develop a "sulpture park" and that the Convenor, DGU would investigate and would contact Mr Cowan;

 

4.6   that Moffat Art Collective was having difficulty in finding affordable exhibition space and that the Group was advised to contact Dumfries and Galloway Council's Business Advisor Creative Industries in respect of space at the old Moffat Academy building;

 

4.7   the request for temporary use of Council land to exhibit some of his work and that the Principal Arts and Museums Officer would investigate and contact Mr Cowan;

4.8  that artists would like to see better links developed with other artists/businesses and the view that artists' marketing information needed to be more accessible and that this could be achieved by better co-ordination of the "DG What's Going On" website;

 

4.9   the suggestion that visual arts could be showcased in high streets to promote this genre and that artists in Langholm had collaborated and were trying to develop Langholm as a "destination" in terms of art and culture;

 

4.10  that "Spring Fling" entry costs were often prohibitive particularly for fledgling artists to fund exhibitions; and

 

4.11  that the previous "Annandale Painting Challenge" had been very successful and the suggestion that this project could be repeated in the future.
